Almost Quiet

Wednesday morning, and it is almost quiet here. Jessica is at Nanny’s house having had a sleepover law nignt, Carl is at work, so it is just Alice and I here at home.

I have the window open, and the blissfully cool air is coming in. The tree tips are swaying lzily, but I can’t hear them. Any the budgie is awake and gives the occasional tweet, but looks as though she a contemplating a nap.

Alice is playing with a ball, but she is slow and sleepy. She has been under the weather for a couple of days with a temperature which comes and goes, fitful sleeping, not much appetite, and a desire that she not be put down for a moment. She has hardly napped at all for two days.

I took her downstairs for breakfast, and after a finger of fruit toast she fell asleep in her high chair. I carefully picked her up, took her upstairs, snuggled in bed with her, put on her lullaby seahorse, and fed her to sleep. Or so I thought….Instead of going to sleep, she woke up!

So I had a quick shower then took her downstairs for breakfast attempt 2. She ate her porridge, then I made a cup of tea….turned around to find her sized off again. I have brought her upstairs to try and get her down for a nap…

But first I am having a cup of Earl Grey and a sit down, and just soaking up the quiet for a few minutes. The sky is a darkening grey outside, but I actually really like weather like this, the kind of weather which makes you glsd.for your teapot, and even contemplate a bit water bottle later. Not that it is cold enough really for that, but it is more for the cozy and the comfort than the function of it. How blissful after that searing heatwave to be thinking of a hot water bottle!

Jessica is coming back this afternoon, and we are going to the shops together, so I do need to write a shopping list, but as long as I can get Alice to settle, I plan to do a few squares on my crochet blanket, and then some thinking. To try and untangle.some.of the threads of my overwhelm and try and plan a path forward.

I had a visit from a dear friend yesterday, and she is feeling similarly overwhelmed with life. She showed me something she is doing, which I think I will try. She has one of those diaries designed for Mums (why not Dads too I do not know!) Where there is a column for each member of the family. She is using one column for appointments, reminders of birthdays and so on, another column for her menu plan, another column for housework, and then the last.one as a running to-do list. I think this is a brilliant idea!

Alice has just crawled over to me, pulled herself up, and grinned over my knee at me. Time.for a third attempt at getting her to sleep…..

Wherever you are, I hope you are cozy and peaceful today,

Love

Mimi
