I have a friend, a lovely friend, who I met some nearly 20 years ago while doing my A levels. She is the kind of friend who we might not see each other in person for several months, but when we do see each other, it feels like only a day or so since we last met.
We share similar interests and both had do it yourself weddings, and we have the best whatsapp chats.
Just now we were lamenting that bathcubes (and bath pearls) are no longer a thing and remembering soap and pipecleaner swans that you would find at bazaars. Ahh, bazaars too.
It sparked a chain of thought in my mind. These days we have cupcakes as commonplace, and much as I love a cupcake, I feel.a bit sad that they seem.to have overshadowed the humble fairy cake. Fairy cakes were so simple but such a great when I was little. They would be topped with some glacé icing and maybe a little sugar flower, or hundreds -and -thousands (not sprinkles!)
This led me on to thinking that again, while I love a bath bomb, perhaps the bath bomb is the cupcake the bathing product world, and the bath cube is the fairycake. I do miss bathcubes!
Oh and thinking of fairycakes, butterfly cakes too….you don’t really see those any more.
I think that might be my baking started out for the next few weeks!
So man of the best pleasures are slightly old fashioned, aren’t they? A rustling paper bag with a quarter of humbugs within; the hot water bottle at the bottom of the bed, the new pad of writing paper and envelopes. The world is a better place for such things I believe.
